Andrew Goodwin developed a useful way to analyse music videos, which has proved to be a useful reference point for our own music video analyses. (while writing in "Dancing in the Distraction Factory" - Routledge 1992)
Genre Characteristics
The video should demonstrate genre characteristics, so visual aspects that are suitable to what sort of music that is going with it. For example, a stage performance for a rock video, but then a dance routine with singing for a boy/girl band.
Lyric & Visual Relationship
There is usually a relationship between the two, either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting, to strengthen the song and the music video (so maybe audiences remember/like it more).
Music & Visual Relationship
Similar to the genre characteristics, as visuals connect with the music, and also similar to above, as they can be illustrative (guitar with a guitar solo), amplifying or again, contradicting (for example, Blink 182 is a rock band but made a music video that looked like a boy band, for contradicting humor).
Visual styles
For example, bands and their record labels will need close ups of the artist to sell the artist, or the artist may develop motifs which can recur across their other music videos and other work.
Notion of Looking
Reference to this notion of looking, for example, screens within screens/telescopes, etc.
Voyeuristic Treatment of the Female Body
Nowadays this is obvious in R'n'B music videos or rapping music videos, to demonstrate their wealth/luck and how women want them because of their musical skills.
Intertextual Reference
These references could be to films or even TV programmes with which the music is associated, for example music videos showing film clips are usually in the soundtrack to the film, so the two medias can advertise each other simultaneously.

Music Industry Research - Initial Ideas
Looking at women who are represented in a "bad" way to the public (1. Lady gaga
2. Christina Agularia
3. Britney spears/Jessica Simpson
4. Shakira
5. Katy Perry),
looking at women who are represented in a better/"good" way to the public (1. Kelly Clarkson
2. Celine Dion
3. Dido
4. Adele
5. Duffy)
and looking at women who are represented in a mixed way, good and bad, to the public (1. Beyonce Knowles).
All of these artists are in the "Pop" genre, however are seen by the industry and their audiences in different ways. It is also notable that the type of Pop music that comes from the badly represented females has similarities within that group, however differs to that of the good represented females, which are also similar within the group. I will also be looking at this further.

Music Industry Research Proposal
Topic:
How are female acts represented in the Pop genre? Is this a good or bad representation and how does it affect up and coming female Pop acts?
Reason for choosing this topic:
I will be able to use lots of examples to back up facts or opinions, and i think the topic is interesting and a widely talked about and debated over subject within the music industry/students.
What do you expect to find out?
What type representation seems to be most common, and if this affects how successful the artist becomes - so does it affect new artists? Also, if the representation has changed much over the past 10 or so years. I suspect most acts will be a bad representation of females, as main pop acts i see don't seem respectful of their bodies or femininity.
How will it help develop understanding for the Year 13 coursework?
It will help me understand the conventions of the Pop genre of music - artists in the video, which could help me in my making of my video, however the music I'm using is not pop. Also, within the music industry, it would show how pop influences and encourages things from new acts and generations.
How will you express your findings?
PowerPoint presentation with video examples o blog work if i can't use PowerPoint. Words and music video examples.
What research will you carry out?
- Questionnaires
- Charts (Singles/Albums/Success rates of artists)

Music Video I Like
"Like A Boss" - Lonely Island
This video by the Lonely Island is quite popular, and i like it because of its funny side. Its a conventional music video mostly, though probably has some unconventional traits like the giant fish towards the end. The lyrics and visual relationship is very strong, which is mailny why i like it, as the lyrics are unusual and in a way "funny" making the video also unusual/funny. The lyrics are the main part of the song, as the music behind the lyrics isn't very loud or prominent. The Lonely Island is american based, and specialise in comedic shorts and music parodies. They have also recorded a full-length television pilot. The video amuses me, along with their other ones "I'm On A Boat" and "Jizz In My Pants".

Conventional Music Video
"To Take Over, The Break's Over" - Fall Out Boy
This music video, by Fall Out Boy contains most of the expected traits of a music video for a band of their style. Fall Out Boy are considered a Pop Punk band, and the usual features of this genre's music video is focusing on the band and the music, which this video does by capturing the band performing their song to fans, but with the twist of it being the dog's dream. However, the dog seems to be owned by a member of the band, so it all ties back to the band. The music fits with the video as we see them playing the song we hear.
There are also lots of close up and focus on the artist, as towards the middle we see fan's "dissing" the band because the song was on their 2nd album, and obviously many people thought they had changed for worse, so the video concentrated on demonstrating it was a good change. It also shows the bands weath/fame/fortune and skills with the women, as there is an expensive looking car in the background, and the use of women dancers, dressed in skimpy dance outfits dancing "sexily" towards the band. Some of the lyrics also match to the video "flash flash flash photography" lyrics match the setting as they seem to be in a photographing suite or somewhere similar. And the "We don't fight fair" line could reference to the fan's reaction to the band's new album, as demonstrated in the video.

Unonventional Music Video
"Africa Shox" - Aphex Twin/Chris Cunningham
This is an unconventional music video in a few ways. The footsteps at the start of the video don't match the beat, they are just random. However the sirens in the background are shown from a police car, though this isn't part of the music, as is the walkie talkie voice. The setting also doesnt match the name of the film, as it's called "AFRICA shox" (as are the lyrics at the start when they say "africa")yet is set in an urban part of New York. The artist/DJ for this peice isn't shown in the video, so the video isn't set around him, and does not promote his identity. Even though its sort of dance/trance/dub-step music, the setting and actions don't play with the conventional ideas of that genre; there are no half naked women, and no dancing throughout the video. There also doesn't seem to be riches or extravogant belongings associated with the main person in the video, as he is homeless.
The man's movements don't coincide with the song, and as he wanders through the streets of downtown New York.
TBC
